Description

Create festive and delicious Reindeer Pretzel Rods perfect for holiday parties and treats. These adorable snacks combine crunchy pretzel rods dipped in smooth milk or dark chocolate, decorated with candy eyes, red candy pearls for noses, and pretzel twists cut into antlers. Easy to make and fun for all ages, these reindeer-themed treats bring a delightful charm to any celebration.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Coating

  • 12 ounce package meltable milk or dark chocolate

Pretzels

  • 2024 large pretzel rods (about one package)
  • 16 ounce package pretzel twists

Decorations

  • Candy eyeballs
  • Red candy pearls (or red M&M’s, sixlets, or cinnamon candies)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Baking Sheet: Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set it aside to use for placing the dipped pretzels.
  2. Melt Chocolate: Place meltable chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring between each, until fully melted and smooth. Alternatively, melt chocolate chips over a double boiler if meltable pieces are not available.
  3. Dip Pretzel Rods: Slowly dip one end of each pretzel rod into the melted chocolate, covering about half the length of the rod. Lay the dipped rods on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Add Face Decorations: While the chocolate is still wet, press two candy eyeballs and a red candy pearl onto each dipped end to create the reindeer’s eyes and nose. Once decorated, place the tray in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to harden the chocolate.
  5. Prepare Antlers: While the rods chill, cut pretzel twists on a cutting board using a straight edge knife to create small pretzel pieces resembling antlers. Expect some breakage and aim to have two antlers per reindeer rod.
  6. Attach Antlers: Remove the baking sheet from the refrigerator. Reheat chocolate if hardened by microwaving in 30 second increments until smooth. Transfer to a piping bag or sandwich bag and cut a very small tip off the bag for precise piping.
  7. Secure Antlers: Turn each pretzel rod around to the back side and pipe a small dab of chocolate where the antlers will be attached. Press two pretzel antler pieces into the chocolate and set aside to harden. Repeat for all rods.
  8. Final Setting: Return the baking sheet to the refrigerator and chill the rods for another 10 minutes to fully set the antlers and chocolate decorations.
  9. Serve: Remove the reindeer pretzel rods from the refrigerator and enjoy your festive, crunchy treats.

Notes

  • Store finished reindeer pretzel rods in an airtight container at room temperature; they will last as long as typical pretzels and chocolate treats do without refrigeration.
  • Using a 16-ounce package of pretzel twists is recommended as many pieces break during cutting; leftover pieces can be eaten as snacks or saved for other recipes.
  • When trimming the tip of the sandwich bag used for piping chocolate, cut only a very small opening to control the flow of chocolate and avoid excess mess.
  • Broken large pretzel sticks can be repurposed into “baby reindeer” for variety and to reduce waste.
