Description

This Philly Cheesesteak Casserole is a hearty and cheesy twist on the classic sandwich, packed with tender sliced beef, sautéed bell peppers, onions, mushrooms, and melted provolone cheese. Baked to perfection, it’s a comforting dish perfect for family dinners or potlucks, combining savory flavors with creamy textures in every bite.

Ingredients

Units Scale

Meat and Vegetables

  • 2 lb thinly sliced beef
  • 1 small onion sliced
  • 2 bell peppers sliced
  • 2 cups button or baby bella mushrooms sliced

Dairy and Broth

  • 2 cups shredded provolone cheese or slices
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup beef broth

Seasonings and Oil

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt or salt + garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Set your oven to 350°F to get it ready for baking.
  2. Sear the beef: Heat olive oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced beef, garlic salt, and black pepper, cooking until browned. Remove the beef and set aside, leaving about 2 tablespoons of grease in the skillet.
  3. Cook the vegetables: Add the sliced bell peppers, onion, and mushrooms to the skillet. Sauté until they are softened and fragrant, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Prepare the sauce: Stir in Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and cream cheese. Cook and stir until the cream cheese melts completely and the mixture is smooth.
  5. Combine ingredients: Return the cooked beef to the skillet and mix everything thoroughly. If your skillet isn’t large enough, transfer the mixture to a 9×13 inch baking dish and combine.
  6. Add cheese and bake: Top the mixture evenly with shredded provolone cheese or slices. Bake uncovered for 15 minutes, or until heated through and cheese is bubbly. For a crispy top, broil for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  7. Serve: Garnish with chopped fresh parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can substitute the beef with chicken or turkey for a different protein option.
  • Using a pre-sliced beef makes this recipe quick and convenient.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of hot sauce or a pinch of red pepper flakes.
  • Ensure your skillet is ovenproof or transfer to a baking dish before baking.
  • This dish can be assembled ahead and baked when needed.
