Scale
Meat and Aromatics
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 small onion, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
Spices and Seasonings
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1/2 tsp dried parsley
- 1/2 tsp salt
- pepper to taste
Liquids and Sauces
- 28 oz marinara sauce
- 1/2 cup chicken broth
Cheeses
- 4 oz mozzarella, shredded or sliced
- 1/4 cup fresh Parmigiano Reggiano, grated
Other
- 24 oz potato gnocchi
- optional: fresh basil for garnish
Instructions
- Brown the Meat: In a large sauté pan, cook 1 lb of ground beef over medium heat until browned and no longer pink. Drain off any excess grease to keep the dish from getting too oily.
- Sauté Aromatics and Seasonings: Add 1 tbsp olive oil, chopped onion, minced garlic, onion powder, garlic powder, dried oregano, dried parsley, salt, and pepper to the pan. Cook together for 3-5 minutes until the onions become translucent and the spices are fragrant.
- Add Sauce and Broth: Pour in 28 oz marinara sauce and 1/2 cup chicken broth. Stir everything to combine well, ensuring the meat and aromatics are evenly distributed in the sauce.
- Simmer: Reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and allow the sauce to simmer gently for 20 minutes. This step helps deepen the flavors and cook the spices fully.
- Cook the Gnocchi: Stir in 24 oz of potato gnocchi, then cover and simmer for an additional 10 minutes. The gnocchi will cook through and absorb some of the sauce.
- Add Cheeses: Stir in 4 oz of shredded or sliced mozzarella cheese until melted into the mixture. Then, sprinkle 1/4 cup grated Parmigiano Reggiano on top for a savory finish.
- Serve and Garnish: Serve hot, optionally garnished with fresh basil leaves to add a bright, herbal note.
Notes
- Be sure to drain excess fat after browning the beef to prevent the dish from becoming greasy.
- If you prefer a vegetarian version, substitute ground beef with a plant-based alternative and use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
- Fresh basil adds great color and flavor as a garnish but is optional.
- Use fresh gnocchi if possible; frozen gnocchi can be used but may require slightly longer cooking time.
- Adjust seasoning to taste, especially salt and pepper, depending on the saltiness of your marinara sauce.
