Ingredients
Scale
Apple Filling
- 7 tart apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 4 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
Topping
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup rolled oats
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
Instructions
- Preheat the Oven. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s at the perfect temperature by the time your apple crisp is ready to bake.
- Prepare the Apple Filling. In a large mixing bowl, combine the peeled, cored, and sliced tart apples with fresh lemon juice and vanilla extract. This mixture will help keep the apples from browning and add a subtle flavor.
- Layer the Apples. Spread the apple mixture evenly in a 9×13-inch baking pan (or similar size), distributing the fruit to create a uniform base for the topping.
- Make the Topping. In a separate bowl, mix together the brown sugar, rolled oats, and ground cinnamon. Cut the softened butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture becomes moist and crumbly.
- Assemble the Crisp. Sprinkle the crumbly topping evenly over the apple layer, making sure to cover the fruit completely for a crisp crust.
- Bake. Place the baking pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the topping is crunchy and golden brown and the apples are tender.
- Serve. Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm as is or topped with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.
Notes
- Use tart apple varieties like Granny Smith for the best balance of sweet and tart flavor.
- For a nuttier topping, consider adding chopped nuts such as walnuts or pecans.
- Leftovers can be refrigerated and reheated gently in the oven or microwave.
- This recipe can be prepared a few hours ahead and baked just before serving.
- Adjust baking time if using a deeper or shallower baking dish.
