Description

These Chocolate Butter Cookies are a classic treat that’s perfect for any occasion. They’re rich, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious, with a hint of chocolate in every bite.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (Hershey’s Special Dark recommended)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, beat together the softened butter and sugar on medium speed until light and creamy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  2. Add Egg and Vanilla: Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Combine Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt.
  4. Add Dry to Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
  5. Chill Dough: Divide the dough into thirds, wrap each portion in plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight.
  6. Shape and Bake: Preheat oven to 375°F. Shape the chilled dough into 1-inch balls. Place the balls 1 inch apart on ungreased baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake for 7-9 minutes, or until the cookies are set.
  7. Cool: Let the cookies cool completely on the baking sheets before serving.

Notes

  • Storage: These cookies are best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days or frozen for up to 1 month.
  • Freezing Dough: You can also freeze the dough for later use. Shape the dough into balls and freeze on a baking sheet until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag for up to 3 months. Bake from frozen, adding a couple of minutes to the baking time.
  • Variations:
    • Add chocolate chips, chopped nuts, or sprinkles to the dough for extra flavor and texture.
    • Drizzle melted chocolate or a simple glaze over the cooled cookies for decoration.
    • Use cookie cutters to create fun shapes.
