Description

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting and flavorful dish that’s perfect for a hearty family meal. Tender hamburger steaks are smothered in a creamy mushroom gravy and baked to perfection in the oven.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 1/2 cups crushed saltine crackers (about 1 sleeve)
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • All-purpose flour, for dredging
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Gravy:

  • 2 (10.75 oz) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Make Gravy: In a medium bowl, whisk together condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, and parsley. Set aside.
  3. Prepare Patties: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, crushed saltines, milk, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently and form into even-sized patties. Dredge each patty in flour.
  4. Brown Patties: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties on both sides until golden brown. Work in batches if necessary.
  5. Bake: Transfer browned patties to the prepared baking dish. Top with the gravy and cover with aluminum foil. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until cooked through.

Notes

  • Ground Beef: You can use a leaner ground beef if you prefer.
  • Saltines: If you don’t have saltine crackers, you can substitute with bread crumbs.
  • Seasonings: Adjust the amount of seasonings to your liking.
  • Make Ahead: Assemble the casserole ahead of time and bake later. Refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking.
  • Serving Suggestion: Serve with mashed potatoes, green beans, or your favorite side dishes.
